From the Foreword- "In 1945 Americans came home from war. We dived enthusiastically into long deferred projects. A number of us who loved to sing folk songs thought it the most natural thing in the world to start an organization which could keep us all in touch with one another, which could promote new and old songs and singers, and in general bring closer the broad revival of interest in folk music and topical songs which we felt sure would sooner or later take place. We called our organization People's Songs to distinguish it from the scholarly folklore societies, and started a bulletin... The organization People's Songs closed its doors for lack of funds in early 1949... But the singers and songs carried on."
