The Deseret Alphabet was introduced in 1854 and was created by Parley P. Pratt, Heber C. Kimball and George D. Watt. Made up of thirty-eight characters to correlate with basic sounds in the English language, the Deseret Alphabet was intended to be used to help simplify the principles of the English language. There were only four titles published using the Deseret Alphabet including: The Book of Mormon, The Deseret First Book, The Deseret Second Book and The Book of Nephi which comprises the first 116 pages of the Book of Mormon. By 1869, the Deseret Alphabet was abandoned altogether as the characters and words were considered by many Mormons to be difficult to distinguish.
