'Senate Documents' and eagle blind stamped on boards. Rebacked with original gilt stamped backstrip laid over. Spine and edges of the covers are heavily sunned; corners bumped; spine slightly rolled back. With two small contemporary bookplates (one on front pastedown and one on the front free endsheet). Sporadic foxing throughout. Threads occasionally visible in the inside margins of the pages. The large folding map is present in envelope at the rear of volume and is in nice clean condition. The announced purpose of Sitgreaves' expedition was to determine whether the Zuni River actually emptied into the Colorado, and to examine the territory en route. Wheat described the large folding map as follows: "All in all this map is a monumental achievement and while it is marred with misspellings (such as "Butles for Buttes) it is generally correct and exceedingly well done."
