Stansbury's expedition was of great importance, comparable to those headed by John C. Fremont and James H. Simpson. He was given instructions to study the Mormons and their settlements, the neighboring Indian tribes, to find a supply route from Salt Lake City to the Oregon Trail, and to undertake a detailed study of the natural resources of the region. This copy has been inscribed by editor, Brigham D. Madsen, on the title page. The inscription states: "To____, With best wishes, Brigham D. Madsen."
