SIGNED. 118pp. Quarto [31 cm] Tan cloth-effect paper over boards with a dark red ink stamped title on the backstrip. Illustrated endpapers. The spine ends and corners of the covers are bumped, and the front board is splayed. There are roughly a dozen tiny ink stains on the front board. The price-clipped dust jacket has 4 closed tears in the edges. The longer tears measure 1 1/2" deep. Boldly signed by Ralph Steadman in red, with an original drawing and the date "23.1.80," across the entire two-page title page.
Over the years the work of Ralph Steadman has appeared in Rolling Stone, Punch, Private Eye, The New York Times and The New Statesman. He has also illustrated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass and The Hunting of the Snark. However, what is often considered to be his "big break" came in 1969, when he was asked to cover the Kentucky Derby, where he came into contact with the maverick journalist, Hunter S. Thompson's writing. From this point forward, Gonzo journalism was born.
