Boston: James Campbell, 1869. First Edition. Hardcover. 256pp. Duodecimo [18 cm] Original pebbled brown cloth. Title gilt stamped at spine and title "Polygamy and Monogamy" gilt stamped on front board. Title page lists the author as a "christian philanthropist," but the Flake/Draper Mormon bibliography reveals the author to be E.N. Jencks. See Flake #4378. This is the uncommon first edition of 1869, and not one of the later reprints. The chapters on Mormon polygamy were added to the later editions and do not appear here. Spine lightly faded, else a very good condition copy of this title. Although mentioned in the Flake bibliography, not actually listed therein. Very good. Item #10527
This book is from the library of noted eccentric, James D. Wardle "the Socrates of State Street" who housed an enormous library of books on Mormonism, religion and metaphysics in his barber shop on State Street for fifty years. As do all of his books, this copy bears his name and address stamp on the front board alongside his distinctive red & white catalog label, bearing Mr. Wardle's library number and the price he originally paid for the book.
