Foreword: "Long before the white man Thought of finding a new route to the land of luxuries, the Salt Lake valley was a fruitful hunting ground of the Oquirrh Tribe of Indians. We think there must have lived in those obscure days a brave who possessed poetic vision, since, looking over the clean sweep of valley bounded by the regular and colorful rise of the mountains, he likened it to a berry basket and pronounced the Indian word 'Wasatch' denoting it as such."
