Inscribed by Edward Abbey on the front free endsheet. Abbey worked as a part-time ranger and fire lookout at several different national parks throughout the course of fifteen years. The two seasons he spent as a ranger at Arches National Monument (later a national park) in Utah provided the inspiration and raw material for famous work, Desert Solitaire.
