Octavo [23 cm] Brown cloth with gilt stamped title on front board and elaborately decorative black ink, blind and gilt stamping to boards. Cloth and leather sample bindings mounted to the pastedowns. Frontis. Illustrated. Saleman's note pages at the end. Fair only. The spine and covers are rubbed, and subtly stained and damp stained. The cloth on the rear board is rippled, and has a tiny open tear. The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges, and the cloth along the edges is frayed. There are small losses from the cloth at the ends of the spine. The larger loss measures 1/2 inch wide by 1/4 inch deep. There is a 1/4 inch crack in the rear board along the joint at the head of the spine. The corners of the covers are bumped. There are a couple of thin dark stains along the joints. The top edge of the front free endsheet is just a little chipped. The rear free endsheet and rear flyleaves have large heavily discolored strips from the offsetting of the sample leather binding on the rear pastedown. The frontispiece is damp stained, foxed, and very subtly abraded. The title page is foxed and stained, and has a 3/4 inch closed tear in the bottom edge. The text block is cracked a couple of times. The pages are soiled and stained, and occasionally have large pencil scribbles. Many pages have closed tears in the edges. The longest closed tear in 6 inches long. The illustrated pages and the pages at the end of the text have light damp stains along the edges. Contemporary notations on the front free endsheet and pages at the end. Item #30888

"The case came to trial in 1875, and the court ordered Brigham to pay $500 per month allowance and $3,000 court costs.
