Newcastle: W. Thompson, 1790. Leather bound. 611pp. Quarto [27.5 cm] Original brown leather with a black leather gilt stamped spine label. Good. The leather covers and spine are heavily mottled, scratched and rubbed. Glue repair to a tear in the front joint at the foot of the spine. The area covered by glue measures 1 inch wide by 3/4 of an inch tall. There are multiple very dark stains on the boards. The largest stain is on the rear board, and is 3 inches wide by 1 and 3/4 of an inch tall. Subtle restoration work along the edges of the spine and covers, and along the front joint. There are a couple of short cracks along the front joint of the spine. The corners of the covers are gently bumped. Sheets of more recent paper have been applied to the backsides of the title page and frontispiece page, backing large tears and losses. There are a couple of tape repairs backing the title page, and there is a 2 inch long tape repair on p. 321. The pages are age-toned, and have occasional minor staining, and foxing. The pages at the beginning have faint damp staining in the bottom fore edge corners. Darker stains on the frontispiece page, the title page, and p. 254. Paper repairs to pp. 353, 367, 547, 549, 599, 609, and 611. Contemporary manuscript letter bound in between pp. 390-391. Small losses from the bottom corner of p. 421, and from the bottom edge of p. 539. Very small areas of insect nibbling in the surface of the paper of pp. 531-536. Tiny red ink stains on p. 606. The text block is cracked at the beginning, however it is still very sturdy. Item #32758
