The author, Stephen Gaskin, was the co-founder of The Farm, a large community in Tennessee, based on principles of nonviolence and respect for the Earth. The Caravan deals with Gaskin's speaking tour of the U.S, in which he was accompanied by 250 of his friends and students in a caravan of 50 buses and campers. Together they traveled over 8,000 miles as Stephen spoke at colleges and churches about his views of the world.
