Silko, who grew up on the Laguna Pueblo reservation in New Mexico, is often referred to as the premier Native American writer of her generation. Her work often draws upon the stories she heard in childhood, as well as the dissonance between American Indian and white cultures. This is the first edition of the author's first book. The book features 18 poems and 2 printed illustrations by Leslie Marmon Silko, and 3 illustrations by Aaron Yava.
