Ads and title stamped in black, red, and gilt on the covers and spine. Gilt stamped title on the spine. Very good condition, with very minimal wear to the surface and edges of the covers. The inside margin of the second to last page has been reinforced with tape in the inside margin. Item #44824
R. L. Polk & Co. was created in 1870 by Ralph Lane Polk. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Polk began earning a living by selling patent medicines door-to-door. While traveling, he met an enumerator in Ohio who was collecting information for a directory publisher. Excited, Polk took a job with the publisher and served several years in the Midwest before he moved to Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 21 to establish his own company.
