Leather bound. 527; 532; 484pp. Duodecimo [18 cm] 3/4 brown leather with marbled paper over boards, gilt tooled spines, and leather gilt stamped spine labels (volumes 1 and 3 are each missing the lower spine label). Marbled text block edges and endpapers. Frontispiece portraits. Very good. The extremities are heavily rubbed, and all but one of the remaining spine labels have losses from the edges. There are several cracks in the leather at the ends of the spines, along the joints. The longest crack measures 1" long. There is a contemporary owner's name at the head of the title page of volume 3. The books are sturdy. Item #46161

Translated with scrupulous fidelity by E. Foster. The author of this history of the Papacy, Leopold Ranke, was a prominent 19th century German historian, and the first to create the concept of the historical seminar, greatly influencing Western historiography.
