Quartos [26 cm] in three-quarter maroon morocco over pebbled black cloth, with raised spine bands, gilt titles and trim, all edges gilt. Light chipping to leather, corners exposed, upper corner of spine on Volume II torn to a depth of 1.5", Vol. II spine cocked, with front board rubbed; front inner hinge of Volume I cracked (but holding), small dampstain to outer margins of last few pages of Vol. I, else interiors are unmarked. Copiously illustrated with wonderful B&W engravings. The animals in the illustrations are carefully rendered, but have just a whiff of the fantastical about them.
