This copy belonged to noted Western historian Charles Kelly. It has his bookplate on the front pastedown, and is inscribed beneath: "Charles Kelly to Hildegard H---". Pencil marginalia throughout, apparently in Kelly's hand.

According to Farquhar - "Here, after a delay of more than thirty-five years, was published the account of the second expedition so strangely ignored by Powell himself. Dellenbaugh, then 17, was a member of the party. The excellent illustrations are from the author's sketches and from photographs by Beaman. An unusually attractive book."
