Laurence Sterne was an unknown, middle-aged Yorkshire vicar when he published the first volumes of his novel "Tristram Shandy" in 1759. Thereafter he had a brief but noteworthy career as a satirist and professional scoundrel. In "A Sentimental Journey" (first published in 1768) he attacks excessive sentimentalism by describing a tour through France and Italy by a moralizing and over-sensitive parson named Yorick.
