New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934-1935. The Wilderness Edition. Hardcover. SIGNED. Large octavo [25 cm] Dark orange cloth covered boards with gilt stamped titles on the spines, and gilt stamped decorative patterns on the spine and front cover. Top edges gilt, other edges deckled. In light gray paper covered slipcases with yellow and black printed title labels on the top edges. Very good. The spines are subtly darkened, and the edges of the spines and covers are very gently rubbed. There may be a few of small light stains or natural irregularities on the cloth covering the boards. Slight offsetting from the frontispieces. The pages are a little tanned. The front free endsheet of volume 1 is just barely beginning to detach. The text block of volume 2 is cracked at the beginning, and the rear endsheet is cracked along the hinge. There is a former owner's bookplate on the front pastedown of volume 8. The endsheets of volume 9 are darkened. The text block is starting to crack at the beginning, and the front free endsheet is adhered to the inside margin of the front flyleaf, causing several closed tears in the inside margin of the front flyleaf. The longest closed tear measures 2 inches long. There are thin faint damp stains along the top edges of the pages of volume 12. The slipcases are in very good condition. Age-toned, rubbed and lightly soiled. The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges. There are very occasional small splits in the subtly bumped edges of the slipcases. Item #31983
