Newcastle: W. Thompson, 1790. Relatively early printing. Leather bound. 611pp. Quarto [27.5 cm] Original brown leather with a black leather gilt stamped spine label. The extremities are worn, and there is a small glue repair to a tear in the front joint at the foot of the spine. There is a prominent mottled stain to the rear board, which measures 3" x 1 3/4". There has been subtle restoration work to the edges of the spine and covers, and along the front joint. The text block is cracked at the beginning, however it is still very sturdy. Sheets of more recent paper have been applied to the backsides of the title page and frontispiece page, backing large tears and losses. There are a couple of tape repairs backing the title page, and there is a 2 inch long tape repair on p. 321. The pages at the beginning have faint damp staining in the bottom fore edge corners. Darker stains on the frontispiece page, the title page, and p. 254. Paper repairs to a handful of pages. Contemporary manuscript letter bound in between pp. 390-391. Small losses from the bottom corner of p. 421, and from the bottom edge of p. 539. Very small areas of insect nibbling in the surface of the paper of pp. 531-536. Good. Item #32758
With 3 plates plus frontispiece.
