Serendipity Books Catalogue 38: American Fiction of the 1960s

Berkeley: Serendipity Books. Paperback. 65pp. Thin octavo [21.5 cm] Gray, black and red printed wraps. Very good. The spine and wraps are very subtly age-toned, creased and soiled. Item #36791

From the first page- "The idea for this assembly popped up in conversation in a book-strewn living room in Hastings-on-Hudson quite a few years ago. The books were neatly strewn... It seemed then to those present (booksellers all), and, in retrospect, it seems more true now, that American fiction flourished in the 1960. The edges of the decade 1960/1970 are convenient termini to the simple bookseller and cataloguer whose mind lingers on categories. But some very fine novelists started before the fixed date of 1960- notably, Connell, Knowles, Roth and Updike; and so, inevitably, I fudged the perimeters. But every author here has published through the 1960s and began before 1970. That is to say, began before, in anticipation of, or during the Viet Nam war."
