SIGNED. 969pp. Thick quartos [31.5 cm] 3/4 dark brown leather with green cloth covered boards, gilt tooled spines, and decorative gilt stamped borders on the covers. Top edges gilt; other edges deckled. Marbled endsheets. Frontispiece portrait of John R. Young. Abundantly illustrated. Very good. The spine and covers are heavily rubbed along the edges. There are multiple short tears in the leather at the ends of the spine and cracks in the leather along the joints. The longest cracks measure 1" long. There is a small loss from the leather at the head of volume 2, and the front cover is slightly concave. The front free endsheet of volume 1 is just beginning to detach at the head. A prior owner has filled out the ownership lines on the limitation page. The text blocks are sturdy. There is a minor closed tear in the fold out illustration at p. 859. Item #38409

It has been the purpose of the author to trace the causes of the growth of the City, and to describe the manifold activities of its citizens."
