Co-owner, founder and editor of City Lights Books, Lawrence Ferlinghetti was awarded the National Book Award nomination in 1970 for The Secret Meaning of Things, a Silver Medal for poetry by Commonwealth Club of California in 1986 for Over All the Obscene Boundaries, and a poetry prize by the city of Rome in 1993. In addition, the city of San Francisco named a street in his honor, and he was named first Poet Laureate of San Francisco in 1998.
