New York: Johnson, Fry and Company, [1861-1865]. Alonzo Chappel and Thomas Nast. First edition. Leather bound. 619; 660; 642pp. Quarto [28.5 cm] Bound by the original subscriber in contemporary 3/4 brown leather with black pebbled cloth covered boards, gilt titles and decorative embellishments on the spines, raised bands, and double gilt ruled borders on the covers. Marbled endpapers. Fair condition only. Heavy rubbing to the extremities. The underlying boards are exposed along the edges. There are several brief notations from previous owners on the endsheets and flyleaves, and there are sporadic tide marks on the pages, with the largest and most frequent of them being in volume 1. There are occasional small dark stains in the fore edge margins as well, and there are brief numerical notations on the blank sides of the plates. The front free endsheet and the first 5 leaves of volume 1 are completely detached, but present. The text block of volume 2 has almost completely come away from the covers. There is a large loss from p. 171 in this volume as well. The front endsheet of volume 3 is split along the hinge, and the binding cords are visible. The cover is still holding well.
