"The heresy-hunting trial of the Communist leaders at Foley Square came to a dramatic climax on Friday, June 3, when John Gates, one of the defendants, and the first defense witness, was sentenced to 30 days for contempt of court. The government of the U.S.A. thereby demonstrated the despicable stool pigeon character of the entire case. The shameful parade of labor spies, stool pigeons and informers, sole prosecution witnesses, stood out like the presence of an active skunk. Now the prosecution and Judge attempted to make stool pigeons of the defense witnesses. John Gates stopped them in their tracks by his resolute and firm refusal." - The author.
