Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Ex officina Elzeviriana (Daniel and Louis Elzevir), 1670. Later printing. Leather bound. 918pp. Octavo [20 cm] Rebound in modern red leather with red cloth over boards, four raised bands and gilt ruled borders on the spine. New endsheets and flyleaves. Publisher's red stain on the text block edges. "Julius Caesar, Elzevir, 1670" stamped in gilt on the backstrip. Engraved title page. Folding map at the front. Four illustrated plates. The bottom edge of the text block has a small nicked area (roughly 3/4" in diameter), resulting in barely negligible losses to the bottom margins of pp. 625-862. The first original blank leaf has a discreet embossed ownership stamp, and a brief contemporary notation on the reverse. The first few pages at the front and rear have worm holing at the edges. There is also a bit of worm holing in the margins of the map. The title page has a handful of minor markings in pen. The pages are lightly foxed, and they often have light tidemarks in the margins. The tide marks, still light, get larger throughout the last quarter of the book, covering at least half of the pages. There is a large loss from the fore edge margin of the illustrated plate at p. 530 (not affecting the image). Very good minus. Item #51531
A reissue of the 1661 edition.
