The Startup Candy Company was founded by William Startup in the 1830's in Manchester, England. Startup joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Birmingham, and ended up following a woman whom he wanted to marry all the way to Utah. The Startup family moved to Provo, where William set up his candy store. The Startup Candy Company was one of the first candy companies, and grandsons of William Startup went on to develop the first filled candy bar, as well as the predecessor of the breath mint.
