Anaya wrote Bless Me, Ultima, the ground-breaking novel of the life and folklore of Chicanos in south-eastern New Mexico. Tortuga is, by far, Anaya's most difficult title to find in hardcover. Anaya himself was not aware that it had been published in hardcover until years later.
