Although there have been several other Henry Miller bibliographies, Bern Porter's "Henry Miller: A chronology and Bibliography", Thomas H. Moore's "Bibliography of Henry Miller", Esta Lou Riley's "Henry Miller: An Informal Bibliography 1924-1960" and Maxine Renkin's "A Bibliography of Henry Miller 1945-1961", this bibliography was written in the attempt to include a broader scope of Miller commentary and criticism than had previously been available and to help the critic, scholar, and Miller reader focus upon materials relevant to his reading or research. Therefore, I have included all items dealing with Miller scholarship. Whenever there was any doubt about the contribution of any item towards Miller criticism, I included it with the supposition that it may be of use to the Miller scholar. This study is the fifth attempt at a Miller biography and follows the previous studies only so far as it is chronological. The difference comes in that it is much more inclusive than any previous Miller study and that it is the first fully annotated study of Miller's work. - Shifreen, from the Introduction.
