Céline's "Mort à crédit" or "Death on the Installment Plan" revitalized the traditionalist French genre by its blending of Gothic styles with the more modern technique of blurring the lines between character and author. It is the companion to "Journey to the End of the Night". In 1938, shortly after this book's release John Walcott backhandedly idolizes the book for its grotesque narcissism and apolitical theme. Céline's openness to disgust and candor fed into what we now call "dark humor"
