Andrew Joseph Russell (1829-1902) was a 19th century photographer known for his photographs of the American Civil War (he was one of the few Civil War photographers that was a soldier as well) and Union Pacific Railroad. In 1865 he became the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. According to the Oakland Museum of California web site, Russell was "One of a handful of landscape photographers who shaped our perception of the American West in the 19th century. A. J. Russell's work stands alongside of Carlton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge and Timothy O'Sullivan in its aesthetic power and technical virtuosity." The web site further points out that his photographs culminated in the iconic "Joining of the Rails" at Promontory, Utah.
