Translated from the French by Agnes Kendrick Gray. With woodcuts by Frans Masereel.

The novels of Charles-Louis Philippe relate from personal experience the sufferings of the poor.

The Flemish artist Masereel's woodcut series, which were mainly of sociocritical content and of expressionistic formal concept, brought Masereel international acknowledgment. Among them were his so-called image novels including 'Die Sonne,' 'Passion eines Menschen,' 'Mein Stundenbuch,' 'Die Idee,' and 'Geschichte ohne Worte,' which all date from the 1920s.
