Founded in 1953, Anvil Press initially functioned as an association comprised of 10 printers - among them Victor and Carolyn Reading Hammer. The literary Lexington duo was heavily involved in the Kentucky book arts scene. Carolyn also founded Bur Press and King Library Press. She ultimately bought out the other members of Anvil Press and, after 1978, the press was used exclusively for her own projects.

Victor and Carolyn maintained a lengthy friendship and correspondence with Thomas Merton, also printing his "Early Poems 1940-42" and "The Solitary Life" under the Anvil Press. This title appears to be the final publication of Anvil Press. Scarce.
