John Muir (1838-1914) was a well-known naturalist, preservationist, author, and founder of the Sierra Club. In the 1890's, the exploitation of the West's resources and natural beauty and use of Federal lands became a cause of concern for conservationists. Muir's many articles and books heavily influenced the public and policy makers to expand protection, conservation, and preservation of forests and public lands. Along with Muir's second book, "Our National Parks" (1901), his efforts to influence Presidents and generate public support have helped shape the National Park system in the United States and abroad.

"My First Summer in the Sierra" was first published in 1911. The book recounts Muir's first journey through the Sierra Nevada in the summer of 1869 when he was hired to assist in herding sheep to the Sierra foothills, just north of Yosemite Valley. During the four months, from June to September, he was able to take extended trips to the Yosemite Valley and across the Sierras to Mono Lake, where he was overwhelmed with the area's natural beauty, numerous waterfalls, and abundant plant and animal life. This trip changed the course of Muir's life as a western naturalist and supporter of the protection of wilderness areas.

The ten volume "Writings of John Muir" were issued, starting in 1916, in several different formats and bindings. This book is Volume II of the Sierra Edition which was issued in 1917 to 1918 by subscription.
