Art for a House of Mathematics

Salt Lake City, UT: Bliss Studio Publications, 2006. First edition. Paperback. 53 pp. Square octavo. Pictorial wrappers. Distributed by American Mathematical Society. Art for a House of Mathematics by Anna Campbell Bliss, is a visual treasure exploring the range and beauty of mathematics in art, science, and culture. The book is based on a mural commission for the Cowles Mathematics Building at the University of Utah, which offered a challenge architecturally as well as intellectually. The artist was asked by the faculty to create an environment for mathematics that would be a source of inspiration and stimulus for ideas. The mural is a multi-faceted work that extends throughout the building. Small units are organized in clusters to integrate with architectural spaces and develop the content in a cohesive way. Lobby walls were selected to focus the central theme on each of three levels. Additional plates extend the concepts into the corridors like fingers. Much of the work was developed with the help of the computer and incorporated mixed media for a more tactile experience. The 18-inch-square anodized aluminum plates were screened and, in some instances, hand painted. The black anodized aluminum plates were laser etched and color was added by screening. Item #8876
