Friday, Mar 23, 2018 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Event begins at 7pm. Musician Sycamore Slim will perform as attendees arrive and settle in. Bryan Davies, of the Salt Lake Democratic Socialists and the National Association of Letter Carriers will be the moderator for the evening. Author Steve Early will discuss his experience with the Richmond Progressive Alliance, an independent political organization, and his latest book.
“Refinery Town” is the true story of Richmond, California and its activist initiated metamorphosis from crime-ridden, Chevron-dominated town to a hub of progressive political action. It’s the story of how citizens of Richmond pulled together to improve public safety, raise minimum wage, challenge home foreclosures and demand fair taxation of Big Oil. “Refinery Town” is also evidence of what grassroots movements can achieve. As Senator Bernie Sanders writes in the foreword, “This timely book offers ideas and inspiration for making change where it counts the most—among friends, neighbors, and fellow community members.”
Hannah Allison, National Organizer for the Democratic Socialists of America, will follow this up with a broader discussion of strategies for social change under current consideration and debate within the DSA and will explain electoral strategy now advocated and practiced by DSA.
After Hannah, we will hear from a local Democratic state legislator, who represents Utah House District 31. Elizabeth Weight is also a member of the American Federation of Teachers Local 4032 and is a past Vice President of the Utah AFT. She serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Federation of the Utah AFL-CIO and was a delegate to last November's national AFL-CIO convention in St. Louis. She will discuss the experience of working for progressive social change within Utah’s borders.
The final speaker is environmental activist, outreach director for the Utah Rivers Council and elected chair of the Environmental Caucus of the Salt Lake Democratic Party, Darin Mann. Darin is running for the Democratic Party nomination to represent Utah House District 24.
This promises to be an exciting and informative evening – we hope you can make it!
