A DVD Release Party for “The Sonosopher: Alex Caldiero in Life…in Sound” with Alex Caldiero and the Film’s Co-Directors, Torben Bernhard and Travis Low

Ken Sanders Rare Books is pleased to announce a DVD release party for the documentary film “The Sonosopher: Alex Caldiero in Life...in Sound" with Alex Caldiero and the film’s co-directors, Torben Bernhard and Travis Low on Saturday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at our downtown bookstore (268 South 200 East, Salt Lake City). DVD copies of “The Sonosopher: Alex Caldiero in Life...in Sound” ($19.99, Dream Garden Press/OHO Media) will be available for purchase and signing at the event. In addition to the sixty-minute film, the DVD includes over thirty minutes of deleted scenes as well as a booklet containing unpublished writings by Alex Caldiero and a critical essay by Professor Scott Abbott. The event will consist of a short sonosophical performance by Alex Caldiero followed by an informal reception with some light refreshments and good company. This event is free and open to the public.

“The Sonosopher: Alex Caldiero in Life...in Sound” is an experiential voyage into the peculiar life and art of Alex Caldiero. Tracing his birth and childhood in rural Sicily as well as his coming of age as a poet in New York City, Caldiero is found living in conservative Utah, years after his conversion and separation from Mormonism. The film explores Caldieroʼs lifelong artistic investigation into ʻSonosophy,ʼ a unique hybrid of sound, poetry, and philosophy. Borrowing techniques from such diverse genres as avant-garde film and cinéma vérité, ʻThe Sonosopherʼ portrays Caldieroʼs life and work at its most traditional and most bizarre. Utilizing these diverse methods, the filmmakers artfully blend current performance and interview footage, 8MM family videos, and other archive material to tell the intimate story of this Utah artist.

“The Sonosopher: Alex Caldiero in Life...in Sound” received its world premiere at the 20th Annual Cinequest International Film Festival and has screened locally at the Salt Lake City Library, Utah Valley University, and the Sunstone Symposium. Additionally, the documentary was featured in an hour-long episode on KUER’s RadioWest with Doug Fabrizio.
