Between 1871 to 1879, under the jurisdiction of the chief of Engineers of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. George M. Wheeler led an expedition to survey the territory west of the One Hundredth Meridian. The survey's main purpose was to create maps of the area for the establishment of future roads, to record natural resources and to document the Native American tribes of the area. The expedition covered much of the western United States including: New Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Texas.
