From the Introduction- "History has given the name of the Thirty Years' War to the period of time extending from the year 1618 to 1648. Its records are here crowded with startling events, political convulsions, civil wars, bloody battles, and acts of Popish bigotry and cruelty, that exceeded in their vast proportion all those occurring in any previous or later period of thirty years."
