Includes "Hints on Etiquette." R. L. Polk & Co. was created in 1870 by Ralph Lane Polk. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Polk began earning a living by selling patent medicines door-to-door. While traveling, he met an enumerator in Ohio who was collecting information for a directory publisher. Excited, Polk took a job with the publisher and served several years in the Midwest before he moved to Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 21 to establish his own company. R. L. Polk & Co. went on to publish over 1,400 city, county, state and national Directories.
