Signed by Bagley on the title page in blue ink. Brannan was an early convert to the LDS faith, and holds a prominent place in California, and Mormon history. Brannan was the publisher of the LDS newspaper "The New York Messenger" as well as the publisher of the first San Francisco newspaper "The California Star".

Brannan arrived in California in 1846 with two-hundred other Mormons aboard the ship "Brooklyn". When landing in Yerba Buena (now San Francisco) their party quickly doubled the population of the rural outpost. Brannan is largely credited with publicizing the California Gold Rush, where legend has it, he ran through the streets of San Francisco yelling "Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!" A fascinating story of an extraordinary person.
