First line reads, "Your note just arrived. We are drifting out to the South...". Joaquin Miller was an American poet who wrote about the West in a characteristically brusk voice. Cementing his reputation as a frontiersmen, he became known as the "Poet of the Sierras". Before his death in 1913, he had been a horse thief, a mining cook, a politician, and a freebooter.
