William Bell, who had established a studio in Philadelphia, was commissioned in 1872 by Lieutenant George Wheeler to accompany him as a photographer on an expedition into Arizona. Later, he worked as a photographer for the Pennsylvania railroad and with an expedition to Patagonia. (from Getty Museum).
