Inscribed by Miriam MacMillan and her husband on the front free endpaper: "Best wishes from Kudla, Miriam MacMillan and Donald MacMillan." Miriam Look MacMillan was a sailor, author, lecturer, photographer, and explorer, who had a lifelong fascination with the Arctic. Her husband, Don MacMillan, a famous Arctic explorer, was her childhood hero. Donald Macmillan not only traveled 300,000 miles charting new territory, but he also pioneered the use of radios, airplanes, and electricity in the Arctic. In 1981, Miriam was accepted into the Explorer's Club, an American-based international professional society with the goal of promoting scientific exploration and field study. She was one of only a few women accepted at that time. (Information from Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum website).
