Howard Fast (1914-2003) was an American novelist and television writer. This is his story of a street in New York, where the characters' lives are woven together. The characters include a young poet, a district politician, and a prostitute- all striving for the American Dream, which is just out of their reach.

A first edition of the author's third novel and his first full-length novel. Warmly inscribed by Fast to his editor on the front free endpaper: "Nov. 16, 1943 / Seven years after, this / book is affectionately / inscribed to Sam Sloan, / who during all that time / considerately nursed a / small talent into some- / thing that may some day / matter. With all credit / to him - / Sincerely / Howard Fast." Samuel Sloan was vice president and treasurer of the publishing company Duell, Sloan and Pearce.
