The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon, Upon Plates taken from the Plates of Nephi
Liverpool: F.D. Richards, 1852. Third European edition, first state. Leather Bound. xii [1]-563 [1]pp. Sextodecimo [16 cm] Full bluish-black leather with ornamental floral blind stamping to boards. Blind stamped bands and title in gilt on the backstrip. Green endpapers evenly discolored along the edges. Extremities moderately rubbed. Cracked along the front joint and partially cracked along the rear joint. Spine ends a bit chipped. Stitching very occasionally visible in the inside margins (this has no effect on the sturdiness of the text block- it is still very strong). Pp. 209-214 just starting to loosen at the head and foot. Publisher mistrimmed the bottom fore-edge corner of one leaf (pp. 509/10), therefore it has been neatly folded over. Pagination for page 156 printed as p. 56. Numerals in pagination very occasionally faint or partially effaced. Internally, exceptionally clean and bright. Collated and complete. First state, with "Moroni" absent after second paragraph on the title page. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Very Good. Item #70174
First British stereotyped edition, and an early printing of The Book of Mormon. This edition of the Book of Mormon is significant because the stereotype plates were used for all subsequent printings until the 1879 edition. The 1852 edition is also noteworthy due to the fact that it included two new features: the paragraphs are numbered, and chapter numbers are indicated at the inside margins of the running heads. Crawley II: 688. Flake/Draper 601.
Price: $5,000.00
