Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980. The group set themselves apart from other environmental groups of the time with their focus on non-hierarchical structures, organic methods of organization and growth, and especially with their utilization of direct action tactics and sabotage (or "monkey wrenching" — inspired by Edward Abbey's novel) in defense of wilderness.
