Ex-libris James D. Wardle with his usual markings, labels, and ink stamps on the spine and front pastedown. Wardle amassed an impressive library and was often called the "Socrates of State Street" [Salt Lake City, Utah]. Handful of small splits to the cloth backstrip, the longest split measuring 1". Contemporary owner's name in pen on the front free endpaper. Some illustrations colored in with colored pencil. Underlining in various different colors throughout. Amateur drawing tipped in. Fair. Homeopath and Theosophist Jirah Dewey Buck (1838-1916) also wrote "A Study of Man and the Way to Health" (1888) and "Paracelsus and Other Essays." In 1882 J. D. Buck was elected dean and professor of theory and practice of medicine at the Pulte Medical College (Cincinnati), and subsequently of therapeutics and mental and nervous diseases. He was an ardent Mason who passionately defended its mission. "Mystic Masonry" is perhaps his most widely read work.
