A nice poetry/art book with a neat association. At the end of the poet's inscription, and next to Sam Hamill's signature, the signature of editor/publisher/calligrapher Tree Swenson is also present ("& Tree" is in her hand): "To ______ | Happy 40th! | with love from | Sam & Tree." Hamill and Swenson were co-founders of the influential Copper Canyon Press, a nonprofit, independent poetry publisher that "believes poetry is vital to language and living." Copper Canyon was founded in 1972 in Denver, CO, and moved to Port Townsend, WA in 1974. Tree Swenson was also the Executive Director of the Academy of American Poets from 2002 to 2012. American poet and translator Sam Hamill (1943–2018) published poetry collections, taught in prisons, and founded Poets Against the War, a movement to protest the 2003 Iraq invasion.
The artist's inscription reads: "To ______ | with | Great Regards | love, Galen." Galen Garwood is known for his paintings, monoprints, and collages. His works have been widely exhibited and collected (https://galengarwood.com/).
