Charles Anthon (1796-1867) was an American classical scholar and an acquaintance of Edgar Allan Poe. He was a professor at Columbia College and became headmaster of its grammar and preparatory school. He was known for producing classical works for schools, with assistance and translations in the notes. Anthon is also famous for his connection to the history of the Latter-day Saint movement, specifically his interactions with Martin Harris in February 1828 with regards to a fragment of Joseph Smith's translation of the Book of Mormon, a fragment which later came to be known as the "Anthon Transcript." Later, in 1834, he disagreed with Martin Harris over an account where they discussed the authenticity of the Anthon Transcript of the Book of Mormon, adamantly denying that he ever told Martin Harris that the Book of Mormon characters resembled Egyptian characters.
