Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First American edition with the two first issue points on pp. 441 and 443, ***however pages 325-346 have been substituted from a later printing. Hardcover. 624pp. Octavo [23 cm] Original brown cloth with stamped, black and gilt decoration and title to the front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Over 300 black and white illustrations. Pages 325-346 have been replaced with pages from a later printing. These pages are just under 1/4" shorter than the other pages. Extremities gently rubbed and bumped. Hinges reinforced. Several pieces of tape to the pastedowns, and a handful of tape repairs internally. Despite the aforementioned flaws, the book still presents quite well. P. 441 with the tailpiece depicting an urn, flames, and the head of Mark Twain. P. 443 with "The Saint Louis Hotel" caption. "It it" error present on p. 444. Merle Johnson, p. 41-43. McBride, p. 84.
